The changes worth knowing about

Grouped by the part of your finances they touch. Each card sets out where the rules stand today and what to watch on Budget day, and we update them the same week.

Income tax Rates, bands and credits As things stand, the standard rate cut-off for a single earner is €44,000, with 20% below it and 40% above. Any movement in the cut-off or in the personal, employee and earned income credits changes your monthly take-home, and we will put a figure on what it is worth to you.
Pensions Relief, limits and thresholds Relief on your own contributions runs from 15% of earnings under 30 to 40% from 60, calculated on earnings capped at €115,000. The retirement lump sum is tax free to €200,000 and taxed at 20% on the next €300,000. Watch the age bands, the cap and the Standard Fund Threshold.
Auto-enrolment My Future Fund My Future Fund is in phase one: 1.5% from the employee, matched by the employer, with the State adding €1 for every €3 contributed, on earnings up to €80,000. Rates step up to 6% each over ten years, so the number to watch is when the next step lands.
Property Help to Buy and stamp duty Help to Buy is worth up to €30,000 or 10% of the price on a new build, and runs to the end of 2029. The First Home Scheme takes a State and lender stake to reduce what you borrow. Stamp duty is 1% on most homes, and mortgage interest relief comes and goes year to year.
Social welfare State Pension and benefits The State Pension (Contributory) pays a maximum of €299.30 a week from age 66, deferrable to 70 for a permanently higher rate of about €363.90. Any increase, and the date it takes effect, changes what your own fund has to produce.
Business Corporation tax and reliefs For owners the things to watch are employer PRSI, the reliefs on a business disposal from age 55, and what the company can contribute to a director’s pension. Company contributions are generally an allowable expense and are not treated as benefit in kind.

The changes matter differently depending on whether somebody else runs your payroll.

Employed

If you are on PAYE

01Check what the change is worth to you monthly, then put some or all of it into your pension before you get used to it.
02Re-run your pension projection with the new State Pension rate included.
03If you are in My Future Fund, check whether the new rates change the case for topping up separately.
04Review your income protection if your salary changed.
Self-employed or company

If you own the business

01Book the pension contribution before the ROS deadline rather than after it.
02Ask your accountant what the business changes mean for the company’s own tax position.
03Re-check what the company can contribute for you this year.
04Work out what the auto-enrolment rates now cost you as an employer.
